Our Mission

The Better World Coalition endeavors to equip families and neighborhoods to take care of themselves and each other — especially when systems fail.

Who We Are

We are a nonprofit organization rooted in a conviction that is both simple and urgent: no one in the wealthiest nation on Earth should go without food, clean water, or a roof over their head. And yet…

  • 47 million Americans face food insecurity

  • 2 million have no access to clean drinking water

  • 650,000 are unhoused

These are not distant, abstract statistics. They are our neighbors.

We believe the most powerful force for changing that reality is not a government program or a remote charity. It is as strong, connected, prepared community. Better World Coalition exists to help communities become exactly that.

Our Story

We Know What It's Like to Fall Through the Cracks

You've seen it happen. Maybe to a neighbor. Maybe to a family member. Maybe you've felt it yourself—that sickening moment when you realize the safety net isn't there.

Seven years ago, our founder Josh Dunn learned this firsthand. A disabled military veteran, author, and father—he did everything "right." And then an unexpected divorce and sudden layoff left him homeless almost overnight.

He spent a year living out of an old RV, working day jobs, and navigating a system that only caught him because of benefits most people never have access to. A local charity that helps homeless vets paid his deposit and first month's rent. A job within walking distance of that new apartment gave him a way back.

He was one of the lucky ones.

But Josh saw the families who weren't as lucky. The single mothers. The working people who couldn't catch a break. The neighbors who disappeared because no one was there to catch them.

That's when he realized: we can't keep waiting for broken systems to save us.

Josh spent years researching what it would actually take to build communities where people don't fall through the cracks. That research became a book: The Courage to Build a Better World. And that book became the nonprofit Better World Coalition.

Because the answer isn't found in government programs or distant charities. It's found in our own backyards—in the gardens we plant, the skills we share, and the neighbors we choose to look out for.

Today, we're headquartered in Eugene, Oregon, running workshops for families and youth, building the Daily Bread Project, and partnering with local organizations to strengthen communities across the Willamette Valley.

We believe 47 million Americans facing food insecurity is not inevitable. We believe 650,000 people experiencing homelessness is not acceptable. And we believe that when you give communities the right tools, they can build something no institution can replace: neighbors who genuinely take care of each other.

That's the better world we're building. One community at a time.

And we can't do it without you.

Your Community Needs You. Let’s Talk.

Whether you want to bring our programs to your neighborhood, support our work, or explore how we can help your community become more resilient—we want to hear from you.

Strong communities don't build themselves. They're built by people who refuse to wait for someone else to begin.
